Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches
Chris Kirk waited nearly eight years to win a PGA TOUR event again. Waiting one more hole on Sunday was no problem. Kirk stuck his approach to the par-5 18th to tap-in range, and his birdie on the first hole of a playoff lifted him past Eric Cole for the victory at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches on Sunday.
Matt Jones won the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches by five shots Sunday, a final round of 2-under 68 good enough to finish the week at 12-under 268 at PGA National. The margin matched the largest in tournament history, tying the mark set by Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and matched by Camilo Villegas in 2010.
The 21-year-old South Korean started fast and finished stronger Sunday, winning The Honda Classic by one shot over Mackenzie Hughes and Tommy Fleetwood for his first career PGA TOUR victory in his 50th attempt. Im shot a 4-under 66 on Sunday, finishing at 6 under to match the second-highest winning score since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches moved to PGA National in 2007.
Justin Thomas was down to his last chance when he delivered his most clutch shot of the final round in the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Thomas nearly holed a gap wedge on the par-5 18th hole for a birdie to force a playoff with Luke List. Moments later, he hit 5-wood over the water, urged it to keep going and lost it momentarily in the darkening sky over PGA National. That set up a two-putt birdie that made him a winner when List, who hit his own bold shot in regulation to the 18th to set up birdie, could only manage par in the playoff.
Rickie Fowler made it interesting Sunday for as long as it took him to make two big putts to pull away in the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Staked to a four-shot lead, Fowler hit one putt into a sprinkler hole, hit a tee shot into the water and watched a big lead shrink to one over Gary Woodland early on the back nine. Fowler answered with consecutive birdie putts of 40 and 25 feet and closed with a 1-over 71 for a four-shot victory.
Adam Scott won the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches and put to rest any notion that his career would suffer with a short putter. In a tight duel with Sergio Garcia for the entire round Sunday at PGA National, Scott stayed out of the water and closed with an even-par 70 for a one-shot victory.
In the final round of the 2014 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, Russell Henley outlasted Rory McIlroy, Russell Knox and Ryan Palmer in a one-hole playoff to capture his second career victory.
When Rory McIlroy triumphed at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches in 2012, the then 22-year-old became the second-youngest player in history to reach world No. 1. A ball-striking clinic over the first three days resulted in rounds of 66-67-66 to give McIlroy a two-stroke advantage heading into the final day, but it was McIlroy's short game that led him to prevail on an altogether different Sunday.
Rory Sabbatini won his first PGA TOUR event since 2009, shooting an even par 70 to take home the trophy at the 2011 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.
Camilo Villegas secured his third win on the PGA Tour with a 2-under par 67 during final round of the 2010 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.
South Korean golfer Y.E. Yang earns his first PGA TOUR victory at the 2009 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.
